Technical Data

Many stakeholders in the Clackamas River Watershed monitor water quality to meet regulatory requirements and to better understand the health of the watershed.  Below are links to reports, studies, and technical data for the basin.

NEW – CRWP Climate Threat Characterization and Risk Assessment (2026)

In 2026, the Clackamas River Water Providers (CRWP) completed a climate-driven threat characterization and risk assessment for the five water treatment plants (WTPs) on the Clackamas River. The assessment was conducted to support a coordinated approach to climate risk management and resilience planning across the watershed using the American Water Works Association (AWWA) J100-21 risk assessment methodology.

The study evaluated how projected climate change impacts—including wildfires, drought, intense rainfall, and increased nutrient loading—could affect drinking water treatment. It examined risks such as degraded water quality from taste and odor compounds, cyanobacterial toxins, disinfection byproducts (DBPs), and increased potential for opportunistic pathogens such as Legionella. The assessment also considered impacts on critical treatment plant dependencies, including staffing, chemical supplies, and electrical power.

As part of Phase II, the project identified and evaluated risk reduction opportunities for the highest-priority risks at each facility. Near-term regional recommendations included implementing cyanotoxin prediction systems, expanding cyanotoxin monitoring, and conducting multi-facility cyanobacterial response exercises. These measures were identified as opportunities to reduce risk without requiring major capital investments. Longer-term recommendations included improving regional interties between water systems and coordinating investments in advanced treatment technologies that could provide resilience benefits across multiple facilities.

CRWP Pollutant Load Modeling Tool (PLMT)

The purpose of the Clackamas River Watershed Pollutant Modeling Tool is to provide an interactive framework for estimating the relative impacts of land use and best management practices on drinking water source quality in various parts of the watershed. This tool can be used to assess baseline conditions and consider scenarios for land management and pollution reduction in accordance with the Clackamas River Watershed Drinking Water Protection and Source Water Assessment Plans.  To access the tool go to https://crwp-pollutant-load-model.azurewebsites.net/

Clackamas River Watershed Agricultural Water Rights Project

The CRWP worked with a Graduate student at Portland State to understand how many agricultural water rights are in the Clackamas River watershed, where they are and how large they may be, and if there are opportunities to work with these landowners under Oregon water law to put water back instream to increase river flows.  Check out the project Storymap here.
